Designing for Porcelain

Two-thirty in the morning for the third day in a row leaves me cursing myself for procrastinating. The fashion show is in five days and I only have two outfits made…yikes! Sometimes pre-planning can make me slow down. I booked work off months ago, knowing I would be in crunch time this weekend, and yet I think I have all the time in the world.

Fabric is piled in no particular order across my couch, thread is strewn about the house from bathroom to living room, and my eyes look like pomegranates. Like a mad scientist, I feel a small giggle bubbling in my gut as I finish a piece of my designs. A quick apology is cast upon my neighbors every half hour for the noise and vibrations coming from my beat up Pfaff, which is penetrating the walls of my 70’s apartment building.

Fueled by coffee and honeycombs, I haven’t quite hit that loopy insanity that is sure to come by next week. Ahhh, caffeine and sugar, my most consistent best friends. My therapist keeps telling me to end those relationships but for now they seem to fill me with the inhuman ability to stay up far longer than my fellow species. Mix that with an adrenal gland pumping a gallon a minute and you have the perfect recipe for insomnia, a state of body that any artist can appreciate.

I am driven by the last minute crunch and find utter excitement in every piece of fashion that I am making with my two hands. Fabric choices, zippers, buttons, colours, lines, stiff or flowing…the more I create the more options I notice and so the cycle of fashion design never ends. Until my designs hit the catwalk at Porcelain.

The JCI Fashion Show, Porcelain happens Tuesday, March 25th 2014 at Performance Works on Granville Island, doors open at 6pm and the show begins at 7:30pm. Tickets are available at JCI (220 Cambie) for $20 or $25 at the door. All net proceeds will go to Covenant House.
