Is silver the new blonde? I’d have to say yes, it is! Ash Blonde has been one of the most beloved and sought-after blonde tones for years. It comes with no surprise that with the rise of pastel and vivid colours, we would see our blonde tones shift to an even cooler side. So what is a toner, and how can you test drive a silver shade? Here are a few ways you can “try on” this trend and see if it’s right for you:
If you’re already a blonde (natural or lightened), the good news is that you’ve got little to no commitment and no damage to your hair with this look. Once hair has been lightened, a demi-permanent colour is applied to the hair. This is also your toner. It’s like a colour glaze that adds cool silver tones to hair while adding conditioners, shine, and gloss at the same time. If you’re a solid blonde, you can achieve platinum silver, steely silver, or a deep smokey silver. If you have highlights in your natural colour, a silver toner will give you an ashier, cooled down blonde and will probably blend well with your natural colour as most of us have naturally ashy base tones in our hair. A ‘mixed metallic’ blonde is great blend of cool lowlights and silver toned highlights. This is a great way to pull off the silver trend as it adds depth and brightness at the same time!
So what if you’re naturally dark haired or have been colouring your hair dark for years? Be prepared to start the decolourizing process. This can be costly, damaging to your hair, and can take many services at the salon to get to the lightest blond possible to achieve those sought-after silvers. I’m not saying it’s impossible! Just make sure that you are prepared to embrace the colour stages you will have to go through during the process.
I might recommend to keep an ‘open mind’ while getting colour corrections: toffee, caramel, rose gold, beige blonde. All of these colours are beautiful and can bring out natural tones in your skin and eyes that compliment. Remember that warm tones reflect shine and light, while cool tones absorb that light and can look matte and flat. There is no one silver for all, but there is one that’s right for you!
