Class 136 of JCI has been working extremely hard on their upcoming show “EMPYREAN: Not all who wander are lost.” One of their biggest challenges of producing the show has been selecting appropriate music to help their theme come to life. After weeks of searching the students came up with a suitable play list complete with music by The Naked and Famous, Fleet Foxes, Local Natives, Miike Snow, Oh Land, and many more. The music is very organic and upbeat, representing the adventurous characteristic of a wanderer. And we are delighted to have a talented group of four called “Soul Kitchen: Catering soul music for your soul’s appetite” mixing it all for us. Have you ever wondered what a person looks like without any make-up? For our fashion show, Empyrean, we want to bring out the Into the Wild theme by using makeup that is really light. The emphasize will be on the eyes with make up in tones of brown, gold and green; the lips we will be nude so it gives that natural feel; and a little bronzer on the cheeks. Just because it is going to be a natural look, it doesn’t mean that the models won´t look gorgeous! Hair is also very important because it compliments the whole outfit. For Empyrean the hair will be very natural too. The hair will either be down with a little braid or half up and half down. It can be straight or really light curls and we will braid in a way that looks messy, like they just woke up. In my opinion hair and make-up are the most important elements in a show because if you have a beautiful makeup and hair the outfit will look perfect! It’s surprising to find in this poor economic time that people are still willing to help others. John Casablancas' graduating class 136 found much warmth in the hearts of Vancouverites when we hosted two bake sales to raise money for the Empyrean Fashion Show (all net proceeds to Covenant House). We did the bake sales outside and inside the school. There was a lot of pressure to make them a success and we weren't feeling optimistic about the sales. We were shouting "bake sale to support Covenant House" but people were just passing by us, then the first man stopped and bought a cupcake! That was all we needed to believe that we were going to "rock" our fundraising bake sale! We will be hosting another bake sale in May (watch the school for posters with all the details) and on May 3 from 6-9pm is our Spa Night. All services include manicures, pedicures and facials will cost of $10. The catch-there are no walk-ins so make an appointment by emailing us empyrean136@gmail.com. The fashion show really is teaching us that the gift of giving is greater than receiving! No chance for my fragile appetite; To be fed by any special ambition; When dreams are broken and fading away; Nobody’s there in helpless night; Cause we’re sleeping alone.” Your Favorite Enemies Imagine.....walking alone, it is cold outside, you have no where to go. You sit down thinking, “How did it get to this?” In your heart you know this is better then if you had stayed. As people pass by you feel judged; someone walks by and mutters under his breathe, “Wasted kid.” He looks at you with a harsh look in his eyes that says he believes you are a waste of time, and space. The truth is there is a place to go, a place where they work with youth between 16-22 years old who are in need of a place to stay, a place where they are willing to work with “wasted kids.” It is an organization called Covenant House. They opened their doors on September 22, 1997 in Vancouver. They offer a wide variety of community support services. They have an outreach team that seeks out youth who are living on the streets, or in single room occupancy hotels. They realize that living out on the streets is a dead end. The outreach workers offer on the spot assistance with food, counseling, and minor medical attention. Covenant House also has a 54 bed crisis shelter that offers safe housing, food, clothing, and counseling to the youth that come there. It works on a first come, first serve basis. They try to meet immediate needs first then they begin working with the youth on a plan to help the young person become more stabilized, and eventually to be able to live more independently (Rights of Passage Program.) Covenant House realize, “it takes an enormous shift for the kids to move inside” and the process may take several attempts before being successful. They believe no kid is a wasted kid and that there is hope. They are willing to look past the mask and see what is underneath. I am happy that JCI Fashion Class 136 has the opportunity to, not only raise money for this organization, but to raise awareness through our fashion show, Empyrean, on May 24, 2012 at Performance Works. Empyrean: Not all who wander are lostApril 19, 2012
"I read somewhere how important it is in life not necessarily to be strong...but to feel strong. To measure yourself at least once, to find yourself at least once in the most ancient of human conditions.” -Christopher McCandless John Casablancas Institute's Fashion Business & Creative Arts students are hosting a graduating fashion show entitled Empyrean: Not all who wander are lost on May 24, 2012 at Performance Works. The show is inspired by the biographical film "Into the Wild" directed by Sean Penn and starring Emile Hirsch as Christopher “Alexander Supertramp” McCandless. In the film, McCandless leaves his conventional and successful life to go on a voyage of self-actualization in the Alaskan wilderness. There, McCandless finds joy and relishes his time of solitude, finding peace, solace, and his form of “heaven." Using this as jumping off point, we selected the word Emyprean- the highest point of heaven, things belonging to or deriving from heaven- and created a concept and theme of self discovery. The students related the film’s story with their own similar journey at John Casablancas and the end of the year fashion show as their highest point of “heaven.” At the end of his travels, McCandless realizes that true happiness can only be found and shared with others. Much like the protagonist of “Into the Wild,” Class 136 enjoys working collectively to build their “heaven” and can't wait to share it with the audience and the net proceeds with Covenant House. Spring is in the air and that means it's market season. It kicks off this weekend with Make It and Nifty for $50 and then on May 6 it's Got Craft and Portobello West happens on May 26 and 27. If you are an eager supporter of local and independent design, the fashion market is the best place to shop. With everything from Daub + Design bikinis to the powerful jewellery of Irit Sorokin Designs, you can find beauty at every price point. The wonderful part is that you get to interact directly with the designers so there will be a story to tell when you wear or share your latest purchase. It's also a great place to network, offer your services as a volunteer/intern, or to do research for projects. So get out there students and learn more about the Vancouver fashion scene. You won't easily find this information in a text book or a classroom.

Shop to Support Covenant HouseMarch 09, 2012
One of the best parts of the JCI fashion show is the mystery gift card display. They always add to the ambience and build on the fashion show theme; but even better is that your $10 donation gets you a minimum $10 gift card in return. When you are supporting a charity like Covenant House, you simply can't go wrong. Here's a little enticement about what you might take home if you buy a gift card or participate in the silent auction. There will be items from Artikol, GumDrops, Fancy That Event Styling, Blubird, John Fluevog, Starbucks in Gastown, Vivio Flowers, and Soirette Macarons & Tea. And one of the greatest things-Canucks tickets that will be part of the auction. Thanks to all the companies that have donated! While raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for various worldwide causes; Obakki delivers powerful yet soft and feminine garments for the modern women. Looking for a model can be strenuous until you find the ones that will make the runway come alive. When holding the auditions for our fashion show. Theorem Nouveau, we were taking into account their particular look and style, how they walk and if they would fit with our theme. Within two hours we saw a variety of models and in the end hired eight. The models ranged from 14 years old to their early 20s. They was also a range in personalities; some were nervous while others were confident because there have been in the industry for so long. Some brought comp cards while others brought their books to show us their pictures. Some shook hands and other just smiled at us. Some shook their hips, swung their arms, stomped in their walk, and others were truly graceful. We know the models we have selected, like Becky pictured in a previous JCI show, will take our show to a professional level. Roshanna Bradder, JCI Fashion Student The Look for Theorem NouveauFebruary 22, 2012
Theorem Nouveau is a statement: a new way to see the world and all of its beauty. A revolt against the norm is seen across the visual development of Theorem Nouveau. Texture, translucence and light is the main focus when it comes to hair and makeup for the show. What's old is new again with thick, voluminous crimped hair. Glistening abstract headpieces in prismatic colours add fashion to the mix while representing the colours of the sky. The base for the face is clean and dewy, the lips are nude and covered in sparkling crystals to represent the beautiful texture and exponential growth of minerals and salt within the earth. To keep all of the attention on the statement lip and headpieces, the eye makeup will be white – from mascara to shimmer – clean, frost-like and effortlessly sleek. Class 135 will showcase their fashion vision Theorum Nouveau on March 20 starting at 6:30 pm at the Performance Works building on Granville Island. JCI helps open doors for homeless youthFebruary 08, 2012
Covenant House has been chosen as the 2012 charity for John Casablancas Institute. The first group of students to show their support is class 135 with their fashion show, Theorem Nouveau. Covenant House is an amazing place that offers shelter to young homeless people in need. They have been doing so for generations and continue to build relationships with the community and the youth that come through their doors. They accept anyone 16 to 22 years old that are not a threat to themselves or anyone around them. Generally, they will get a warm shower, clean clothes, a bed to sleep in and a basic meal. They will also be blessed with medical care and counselling if necessary. Covenant House’s goal is to get these young people back on their feet, get them clean, get them a job, or get them back with their families again. With the help of volunteers and donations from the community, Covenant House has been able to offer accessible programs and shelters to those who have nowhere else to go. They even have an “Extreme Weather Response” program which allows for 12 extra beds (normally they have 54) so that they can take in extra people during times of bad weather. “We are ecstatic to have Covenant House as the charity we are donating to because as a class we support what they do for Vancouver and the homeless. We want to raise money to help these young people get back on their feet and have the privilege to get an education and pursue their dreams like we have been able to,” says fashion student Jocelyn Smith. Class 135 will showcase their fashion vision Theorum Nouveau on March 20 starting at 6:30 pm at the Performance Works building on Granville Island. Introducing Theorem Nouveau- a fashion showJanuary 31, 2012
Theorem Nouveau is a fashion show that will be put on by the most recent crop of JCI Fashion graduates. Dubbed “A Manifestation of Our Perceived Reality,” it reflects a stylized vision of the natural world. The idea came to life when we pitched all our ideas together. Though they differed, they all stemmed from a similar concept; the idea of things coming together to form something larger than life. Our end result became something surreal in nature. The fashion show will present an almost dream like vision of the natural world as the colours of nature juxtapose with vivid light. Imagine a kaleidoscopic fantasy that is simultaneously bright yet soft and striking yet sensual. And just as the forces of nature come together, we as a class have united in our ideas and actions and are truly excited to showcase our vision this March 20th at the Performance Works building on Granville Island. All net proceeds benefit the Covenant House Foundation. Anticipating Style at Big FootNovember 23, 2011
Since the Spring and Resort 2012 collections have been out for a while, it’s a perfect time to start envisioning what to wear to Sasquatch. During the start of winter in Vancouver there’s nothing I’d rather be doing then imagining the sunshine and a music festival. Here’s what I’d like to wear: Proenza Schouler Resort 2012 Collection – Earthy, Navajo-inspired outfits circa San Francisco in the late ‘60s. Christopher Kane Resort 2012 Collection – Metallic and rainbows take over. To snag some early bird tickets go to: Sasquatch Music Festival Pre-Sale Tickets.

The latest crop of fashion graduates put on their course end fashion show, there are awards for all programs at JCI (hair, makeup, aesthetics, and fashion) and it's a fundraiser for the Looking Glass Foundation. There will be a cash bar, an auction with amazing items, and much more. Get your tickets from reception at JCI to save yourself some money (tickets are $15 for JCI students, $25 in advance and $30 at the door). OBSIDIAN inspired Fashion and AccessoriesNovember 15, 2011
The year end fashion show is quickly approaching and all the designers are in! Variations of the mysterious and luxe Obsidian theme are just about ready to take to the runway… The impressive line up begins with three unique jewelers. Penny Layne Jewelry is based out of Victoria, BC and run by Sasha Staples. Using quartz, feathers, and vintage charms, she creates awe-inspiring, unique jewelry. Karen Fung decided to take a silver-smith class one day and all of a sudden in 2010, Meiku Designs debuts its first collection, Karma. Inspired by the colours of the west coast and using natural materials like wood, leather and waxed linen, Fung design casual, elegant pieces. Wolf Circus is another jeweler from Victoria, BC. Fiona Morrison started Wolf Circus in March and has already had success getting into boutiques. She is an expert in mixing edgy with fairytale, often using bullet casings and charms on the same pieces. Fiona also donates all proceeds from her friendship bracelets to the BC Cancer Foundation. John Fluevog has graciously provided all footwear for the show. To say that they will be extraordinary is an understatement. Look out for the sexy and distinctive designs on all the models. Rounding out the fashion show are our clothing vendors. Franz Albana recently graduated from the VCC fashion design program and churned out his first collection, “Mistakes.” It is a strict collection of black and grey variations that happens to be unisex! Sarah Kudelski is another up and coming designer based in Vancouver. She also graduated from VCC this year. Her designs will bring out the feminine side of Obsidian. Last, but certainly not least is One of a Few. The local favourite has been on many JCI runways and Michelle Rizzardo’s continued support is greatly appreciated. Her boutique seems to always stock what JCI is craving. The OBSIDIAN fashion show is happening this Thursday November 17th at the Villa Amato Ballroom (88 East 1st). Doors open at 6PM with the fashion show starting at 7:30PM. We can’t wait to see you there!
Sonam Dhudwal, JCI Fashion Student Shhhh…Silent AuctionNovember 11, 2011
One of the many exciting things we have planned for the evening of OBSIDIAN fashion show is the Silent Auction. You won’t want to miss out on these great auction items- tattoo gift certificates, a pair of tickets to a Vancouver Canucks game, and beautiful handmade jewelry which will also be seen on the runway. Our class is extremely thankful to those who donated all of the amazing items to be auctioned off. Especially because net proceeds will be donated to the Looking Glass Foundation, a charity dedicated to helping adolescents with eating disorders. The OBSIDIAN fashion show is happening on Thursday November 17th at the Villa Amato Ballroom (88 East 1st). Doors open at 6PM with the fashion show starting at 7:30PM. We can’t wait to see you there!

No matter how prepared you may be, or how well versed you’ve become in the industry, it isn’t until you are faced with the task yourself that you realize how much work truly goes into those few short moments on the runway. That’s what the November graduating class at It’s amazing just how much time, effort, passion, creativity and determination is needed to pull it all together. That’s where the importance of volunteers really comes into play. Having had the pleasure of helping out in past shows myself, I can definitely say what a rewarding and informative experience it is. OBSIDIAN is much more than a fashion show… it is a full event with all sorts of entertainment and swag for the guests. Opening the evening of entertainment are experienced fire hoop dancers Chelsee Albo and Danielle Beth. They will be setting their hula hoops on fire to open the show with a performance that will bring light to the darkness! For those who have never seen professional circus style hoop dancing, let’s just say it’s nothing close to the kind of hula hooping you did as a kid. Hoop dancing is an art and both dancers have performed at various shows, clubs, festivals, and events. Don't miss the OBSIDIAN fashion show on November 17 at the Villa Amato Ballroom (88 East 1st). Danielle Bobrel, JCI Fashion Student daniellebobrel@gmail.comMore than a just a fashion showOctober 19, 2011
The Looking Glass is more than just another foundation asking for your hard earned money. They donʼt bombard you on the street or guilt you into signing up for monthly payments on your credit card. They simply want to help people with eating disorders. When I heard that The Looking Glass Foundation would be the charity for the Obsidian fashion show I was intrigued. This was something I did not know much about; thankfully I don’t have experience dealing with this illness. Joanne Gordon, a Director at The Looking Glass, paid our class a visit a few weeks ago. She gave us more than just insight into this organization; she gave us encouragement and the belief that any donation can truly make a difference. Seeing Joanne talk so passionately about helping these adolescents go through the toughest stage of their lives was truly remarkable. The Looking Glass Foundation is growing. As Canadaʼs only non-profit treatment center for 17-24 year olds dealing with eating disorders, itʼs no wonder thereʼs a waiting list. Joanne made it clear that they only want to improve, prosper, and expand to accommodate as many people as possible. This is where John Casablancaʼs next graduation class comes in. The Obsidian fashion show will be donating net proceeds towards this great cause. So join in making a difference, no matter how big or small it may be. OBSIDIAN will take you deep into a mining cave where you can explore the beauty that is hidden within. To match the theme we decided to have our models’ makeup bold and sleek. Each female model will have exaggerated black eye makeup along with contoured cheeks, dewy bronzed foundation completed with a crimson red glossy lip. To tie the mining theme into the makeup each of the models will have gold foil flakes applied in different ways. It may be on their eyebrows, eyelid, cheeks, hair part or even lips. The hair will be slicked away from the face in a straight ponytail that is parted down then middle and backcombed at the crown giving it a messy effect. The male models will simply be dirty looking with messy hair as they emerge from the mining cave. Don't miss the OBSIDIAN fashion show on November 17 at the Villa Amato Ballroom (88 East 1st). Soundtrack for Adorned CreationJune 17, 2011
Adorned Creation Fashion Show is inspired by bestial themes combined with ornamentation. With such a unique and twisted focus, the music has to be just as eccentric. We discussed music and then everyone brought in a variety of songs that we thought would enhance the theme. It was truly fascinating to hear the different music and see how each person interpreted the theme through music. The music has yet to be finalized but here\'s a sneak peak of our favourite tracks to date.

Strong Songs for Wasted YouthMay 26, 2011
For Wasted Youth- A Fashion Show it is important that all aspects of the show mesh together. That includes a key component, the music, which was picked by me: Leanne McLoughlin. I had to make sure that all the songs picked were intense and strong enough to have the models not only work the runway, but own the runway. The music for Wasted Youth will be strong, defining, distressed, and the epitome of new underground music. Crystal Castles, the Glitch Mob, Chemical Brothers, and Audio Bullys; the songs from these artists will be in perfect beat with the style of the show. And with the collections changing and developing throughout the show, the music is designed to enhance each mood the stylist or designer desires. Wasted Youth is a reflection of our generation and we are hoping to show that when there is disaster there is rebirth. The music has to not only match the looks but send an over all strong message of our theme. I hope you will hear it! Wasted Youth takes place June 8 at Heritage Hall (3102 Main St.) starting at 6:30pm. Net proceeds to the Looking Glass Foundation which helps adolescents overcoming eating disorders. $20 tickets available at JCI (220 Cambie) or pay $25 at the door.

How to look great at Wasted YouthMay 20, 2011
Hair- 1) Bangs are huge for summer so take full advantage of them and find the perfect type to frame your face. If you don’t like bangs then long, natural waves are always hot for summer. 2) Thank Rihanna for the red hair trend. This fiery colour is burning up and the right shade of red will go with any skin tone. Not to be taken lightly, going red takes extreme confidence. Makeup- 1) Wearing bold colours like pink, lime green or yellow will brighten up your face and bring out your eyes. It is a hot retro look and is a great way to wear your favourite colours. 2) Light eye makeup is a huge trend too but since it is summer it is time to lighten the dark red lipstick and try a brighter colour like a neon pink or coral orange.

With the school year for Group 132\'s coming to an end, it could only mean one thing, Wasted Youth a fashion show is even closer. The class is busy preparing for the show; raising money, searching for vendors, and getting the visual decorations ready to go. When planning a fashion show, not only do the clothes need to be well planned but so does the visual display. Good thing, group 132 is creative. The class has come up with crazy ideas for papier-mâché that has the visual and staging team covered in glue, working long hours, and looking for solutions to sticky situations. It\'s this added attention to detail that will bring together the vision of the show. Interested in seeing if we sucessfully fuse decor with design? Come to the show and find out! Ameri Dy, JCI Fashion Student Wasted Youth-Searching for ModelsMay 17, 2011
The Wasted Youth model casting crew headed up to the 4th floor studio to host the auditions for our fashion show on June 8th. As students of John Casablancas Institute, we definitely luck-out in the model department because not only are we a school but a modeling agency as well. Our criteria was pretty simple - everyone had to be above 5’10 and we were looking for eight girls and two guys. We held the casting from 11am-1pm and in that time span we had 13 models come through. All of them were, of course, tall, perfectly fit and gorgeous human beings! We had a tough time picking our favourites but ended up agreeing that we needed to hold another model casting. The date has yet to be determined but we want to make sure we give all John Casablancas\' models a chance to audition for our fashion show and many of them weren’t able to make it to our first casting. Group #132 is extremely excited to present to our friends, family and public all of our hard-earned work summed up into one - sure to be amazing - fashion show! And to make that happen the models need to fit the image of Wasted Youth. The fashion show takes place June 8 at Heritage Hall (3102 Main St.) starting at 6:30pm. Net proceeds to the Looking Glass Foundation which helps adolescents overcoming eating disorders. $20 tickets available at JCI (220 Cambie) or pay $25 at the door.

Thank you Joan!March 21, 2011
Congratulations fashion class 131! We did it; we made it through. Celestial Bloom was a most memorable show that awed people and raised money for the Looking Glass Foundation. This was a student based show but it would not be possible without the relentless efforts of JCI instructor Joan de Raucourt! Joan has been our guiding light from the beginning to the end of this show. She is one of the finest teachers at John Casablancas and is every students\' delight. Working and learning from her has been a great experience. Joan has been a part of the fashion and modeling world for more than two decades, working as a model, fashion show coordinator, a stylist throughout Canada, and also as part of the buying/retailing world. Her accomplishments are endless and her love for her job has been an inspiration for us, the budding fashionistas of class 131. With every step towards the success of Celestial Bloom, Joan has been the unseen force who refuses to take any credit for the master plan. I want to take this opportunity to thank Joan on behalf of class 131 and express how much her patience, experience and sense of humour helped us through this ride.

Time Flies When You are Having Fun!March 07, 2011
I cannot believe it is the day before Celestial Bloom! And my goodness is it blooming with every little detail we have put towards the show; from sourcing vendors and sponsors to making props and turning creative thoughts into reality. We are all hoping our hard work will pay off. As confident as we are, we all just have to keep are heads clear because who knows what will come our way tomorrow. Today we have all the models coming back for fittings so we get the right clothing on the right model. We also have time for last minute prop making and any final touches. All of us are very excited and nervous at the same time, just knowing that today is the last day before everything comes together. I can’t wait for show and to see all of our ideas in effect, but at the same time I can’t wait for it to be over. Then it will be wonderful to have that sense of accomplishment and to know that it was me and a team of nine other classmates who created this amazing show! With all the last minute touches and stress I know my favourite part is going to be when our class walks on that runway and having everyone see and acknowledge the brains behind the beauty of Celestial Bloom.

Sponsoring Celestial BloomMarch 04, 2011
In order to make any fashion show happen money is needed and that is why Fashion Class #131 have been on the hunt for sponsors. Amazingly we found a total of 18 sponsors! Sponsorship can come in a form of cash, goods, or services and depending on the value given, each sponsor is classified into a level and given a different list of sponsorship benefits. The four different levels are bronze, silver, gold, with platinum being the highest. Our two platinum sponsors are Steve Nash Fitness World and radio station The Shore 104.3. Our gold sponsor is West Coast Music. These three sponsors have been so kind and donated five three month gym memberships, radio advertisements, and a guitar and amp. These amazing items will be featured in one of three gift baskets. The Weekend gift basket features a one night stay at the Holiday Inn, different types of liquor, and other romantic items to set the mood. The Beauty gift basket has the gym memberships, a top of the line teeth whitening kit, blow drier, gift certificates for Stanley Sparkle Nails, and more. Charlene Dittrich, JCI Fashion Student The Most Flamboyant MC Yet!March 03, 2011
Only five more sleeps until John Casablancas\' graduating class presents Celestial Bloom, a fashion show where space meets flower power. Our MC for this event is none other than Mr. Giovanni Amenta (Gio) of Pink and Grey. What is Gio all about? Gio has a passion for helping people. His original quest was to become a therapist but he soon realized that he had way too much to say and would find it difficult to listen without giving his thoughts on the matter. After reading an article that explained that the fastest way to change someone’s life for the better was through physical transformation, Gio decided to take his particular flair for helping people to the fashion industry. This was where Gio belonged; it married his creative style with his dramatic flair. Gio is very excited to be involved with Celestial Bloom because “he loves being around fun, fresh energy.\" Previously involved in the music industry with the band Destino, Gio is very comfortable on stage entertaining. He was also the MC for John Casablancas\' Twisted Fairytale Fashion Show where he so impressed the directors of John Casablancas that they invited him to join the faculty as a styling teacher. When I asked Gio what his favorite animal was he replied “A unicorn because they’re magical and this world is lacking in magic. They are rare and unique as we all are in our own right; and besides they get to live with rainbows.” A unicorn is the perfect analogy for our fashion show and MC! Allison Tubbs, JCI Fashion Student Cue the ModelsMarch 02, 2011
What would a fashion show be without the models? Nothing of course! With only a week to go before the Celestial Bloom Fashion Show the crunch is on. Last Wednesday we held our very first model audition to find the perfect fit for our show. We had a range of talent from the female models and even saw some men (I thought this part of the job was very exciting!) All models are currently represented by the John Casablancas Vancouver agency. When the models arrived for the audition, we asked them to walk right away to see their own personal style and then elaborated more about the show. After each model had an overall idea of Celestial Bloom we had them walk three to four times back and forward to see what they could bring to the table. We also gave them a little direction as to how we would like to see them walk in the show. From 11am to 1pm we had 14 models audition, not too bad, and thankfully one of the modelling committee members taped all the auditions so we were able to watch it back to make the final decision as to which models really suited our show. After great debate on the models we decided that we needed to hold another audition to have more of a variety to choose from, oh yeah and more men! This will be held today from 12pm to 1pm, hopefully with this last audition we will find exactly what we are looking for to complete our vision for the Celestial Bloom Fashion Show. Celestial Bloom happens Tuesday March 8th at 6:30pm at Performance Works (1218 Cartwright Street, Granville Island). Tickets are $20 from JC Institute (220 Cambie St) or $25 at the door. Net proceeds to the Looking Glass Foundation which supports women suffering from eating disorders. Cocktails, contests, creative styling, and charity; come visit this new planet of fashion!

Bernadette Pham, JCI Fashion Student Eco Fashion WeekFebruary 22, 2011
One of the biggest challenges in life is when you have two great loves that do not go together; like your daddy and your boyfriend or chocolate and your little black dress. It breaks your heart watching them hurt each other and you search for a solution that you feel may never come. I think fashion is fabulous because it is a science and an art. I also love the environment; it keeps me connected to my center despite the hustle and bustle of the fashion industry. But this industry is one of the most damaging to our planet so how can I justify making a living hurting something I love? The answer: Eco Fashion Week! Myriam Laroche provided the answer to my prays last fall with the launch of Eco Fashion Week. Now from February 22-25 at the Salt Building in the Athletes\' Village, designers with an eco friendly intent will showcase their spring masterpieces. Leading the event is Jason Matlo who has not had a fashion show in Vancouver since 2005 and it ends with Prophetik, a brand by Jeff Garnier who recently dresses Liva Firth for the Golden Globes. Together we can be part of the solution by watching some fabulous runway shows and buying the clothes created by these sustainably-minded designers. It is the year 2804 and Earth\'s resources have been depleted, but technological advancements have aided in mankind\'s survival. The creation of a world of genetically modified organisms has helped humans achieve physical perfection. The dissolution of the Ozone layer has pushed humans underground to live in hot houses where enormous flowers and vegetation are cultivated. Mankind has been forced to adapt to the changing world, with one thing as a constant...Fashion. The Celestial Bloom fashion show will feature a diverse colour story and mixes of metallics and florals. Tulle tutus, structured garments, shoulder pads, sparkle, oversize flowers and out of this world styles will depict life light years away on a foreign planet. This over the top trend is extremely popular right now and can be seen around the world from runway shows to music artists such as Rihanna and Lady Gaga. Student Nancy Drummond will be designing a capsule collection and Deanna Hollingsworth, Taryn Belzer, Lauren Deslauriers, Yashna Kapoor ,and Bernadette Pham will be styling segments of the show. Vendors participating in the fashion show include Boutique Bridal, an evening wear boutique located in Gastown; Mela Boutique in White Rock has a selection of trendy, casual chic clothing which has been spotted on celebrities such as Kristen Stewart, Nicole Richie and Halle Berry; and Joye Designs, a jewellery designer located in Port Moody who has designed specific pieces to match the theme. Nancy Amenti, JCI Fashion Student The Performance is in The WorksFebruary 11, 2011
The word is out and the date is set. The graduating fashion students at John Casablancas Institute are excited for their fashion show, Celestial Bloom. The show will be presented on March 8th at Performance Works on Granville Island. Picture walking into a dimly lit room surrounded by black velvet curtains and watch as the room comes to life. This images is why the students chose Performance Works. Its originality and its beautiful set up correlate perfectly with the Celestial Bloom theme. The Performance Works building dates back to the 1920’s when it was first built as a machine shop. It wasn’t until 1992 that the building was redesigned into the Performance Works we all know and love today. Owned by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation–Granville Island and managed by the Granville Island Cultural Society, the space is operated as a permanent rehearsal and performance venue for the arts community. It is considered to be one of Vancouver’s most exciting black box theatres for performance events and productions. Performance Works is located at 1218 Cartwright Street, across from the Granville Island Hotel. There are a few areas nearby that have three hours of free parking per day and there are also several pay parking lots. Just be sure to park your vehicle in a safe place where it won’t get towed because no one wants that to happen. Celestial Bloom happens March 8, doors open at 6:30pm. So get your tickets from reception at JCI and enjoy the future.

For thousands of young women and men when they look in the mirror they battle their true reflection. Most people who deal with an eating disorder live in a world where you can never be too thin, you can never measure up, and every meal is a battle. The mirror is a daily reminder of a world that they can\'t escape. It\'s a feeling of being trapped by a disease that controls every aspect of their lives. The biggest misunderstanding about eating disorders is it is not a choice the person makes. It\'s a disease, one that is as deadly as any other disease out there. Anorexia and Bulimia are serious medical conditions that need serious attention. The Looking Glass is not a facility full of doctors but full of people who can help. They provide care and help put people on the path back to themselves. The generous people who help at this facility know it is a long road and have already taken it themselves or with their own children. This is Canada\'s first treatment centre for people who are dealing with this disease. \"Looking Glass\' Woodstone Residence provides safe, professional, person-centered treatment that aims to engage and foster trusting relationships, develop and enhance resiliency, and support developmentally appropriate levels of independence. Woodstone\'s program is comprehensive and multidisciplinary, and conforms to the strongest available evidence of best and promising practice for eating disorders intervention.” They believe that no one should leave the country to receive care. All these people who are fighting this disease want to know that there is hope. The Looking Glass Foundation works in partnership with the medical community and are dedicated to getting these young women and men back to the other side, where they can look at their own reflection and it will match the true one within. If you want to support the Looking Glass Foundation buy a ticket for Celestial Bloom. Tickets are $20 in advance and can be purchased at JCI reception. Then on March 8 buy raffle tickets, have a drink and simply come out to the fashion show so we can be proud sponsors of the Looking Glass Foundation.

Everyone deserves a whisper into Santa’s ear, sharing exactly what they desire for Christmas this year. Fine Finds played ‘elf’ by hosting a Holiday Shopping Event this past weekend - Santa included. From November 25th through the weekend until the 28th, there was sparkling bubbly, pretty chocolates, colorful cupcakes AND a great discount for the entire store. The gift boutique was also spreading the cheer by giving free snaps with Santa in the Yaletown Caboose, along with welcoming customers to bring non-perishable food items in generous support of the Greater Vancouver Food Bank. Kendra Weiss, a Fashion Graduate from JCI , energetically shares the success of the event. “Customers keep saying how great it is for an independent boutique to bring such warmth to the community, allowing for that extra donation!” Handling special events and promotions for the Yaletown boutique, Kendra says there are many more exciting events to arise (brides, be on the look out!) A fruitful event indeed, Fine Finds knows how to do their holiday gifting right. Check out their website to stay up-to-date in the new year!

The Only Ones Vintage SaleNovember 25, 2010
After being repetitively displeased with not being able to attend the many upbeat events held at the hotel since the Grand Opening Halloween Party, I finally satisfied my yearning and attended The Chosen Ones. The premiere took place November 13th and 14th, when many of Vancouver’s established, vintage experts gathered in the Hotel’s Cabaret Room (one of many fantastic settings) to sell their carefully selected items. Can you say dream? I rolled up on the Saturday (I wasn’t keen enough to snipe all the clever items the day before) but was intrigued by the heaps of vintage still available. Great vintage and well priced! I grabbed a few holiday sweaters and then my stomach dragged me to the Latin inspired restaurant that is equally cool and deserves a separate review. The perfect Sunday it ‘twas - vintage followed by brunch, combined in an atmosphere that allows you to live your ultimate retro-inspired dreams. P.S – Look out for The Chosen Ones vintage sale. Yes, that is correct – it will be back and back again as a monthly vintage sale. Rumour has it that the next one may be moved to the hallways of the hotel! Check out their Website, Facebook page and add them to Twitter to keep updated with the many events!

Wish You Were Here Grand FinaleNovember 09, 2010
Cameras were clicking, tripods were propped, and the room was filling up faster than H+M on Boxing Day. Unable to do any thing more, we did the only thing we could, we crossed our fingers and toes and wished for karma to give us the show we deserved. Shockingly, or perhaps not so shockingly, our wishes were granted. The playlist for the show set the perfect tone, the slideshow couldn’t have expressed the theme better, and the hair, make-up and fashions told a powerful and romantic story. Throw in a set of exceptional handmade steam clocks, dry ice reminiscent of fog, and a romantic, vintage sounding vocalist, and you have yourself the perfect vintage voyage. From start to finish the audience was captivated, the cameramen enthralled, and the bar emptied. While the evening was an ideal ending to an unbelievable journey; the night was bitter sweet as we had to admit that after the bows were taken, our JCI student days were drawing to a close. Bon Voyage JCI, thanks for the adventure!
Lindsay Kerdman, JCI Fashion Student Behind the Scenes: nothing is as pretty as is seemsNovember 03, 2010
\"Wish You Were Here\" can be summed in three main emotions: nostalgia, romance, and excitement. Preparing for the show however, cannot. While many of us organizing the “Wish You Were Here” fashion show may feel pangs of nostalgia during the weeks leading up to the event, what we’re longing for is much less glamorous than the embrace of a loved one or a welcome home party. What we yearn for are the basics. We’re nostalgic over days free of stress, nights free of anxiety, and the chance to hit the hay before 3:30 in the morning (if we so choose). As for romance, well, when you’re so busy that the closest thing you have to a romantic encounter is the flirty giggles and hair twirls you whip out when trying to acquire sponsorship, I’d say that ship has sailed. Regardless of all the long and lonely nights, a reality which is both ironic and perfect considering the vintage traveller theme of the show, every ounce of pain is worth it for that one emotion which remains cohesive between both prep and performance – excitement! For many of the students in class 130, this show acts as the grand finale. It’s the platform through which parents get to be proud, friends can be jealous, and potential employers will be wowed. For many of us, this voyage truly is the beginning of a one-way journey, and the excitement of that far exceeds any of those stressful moments we have all become oh-so-good at mulling over. Board the train for the \"Wish You Were Here\" fashion show on Thursday November 4 at 6pm at Villa Amato (88 1st St. East Vancouver). Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door, you can get yours at John Casablancas Institute (suite 150-220 Cambie St. Vancouver).

Travel Nostalgia is the inspiration for the JCI Fashion ShowOctober 04, 2010
The latest crop of graduating fashion students are planning an escape around the world and into the past with their upcoming fashion show. Because traveling today definitely isn’t the same as it used to be, Wish You Were Here is about a vintage voyage. (No yoga pants on this trip, kids!) Travel use to be romantic, exciting, and new. They want to capture that feeling and make it fresh. So imagine a girl standing beside a lamppost on the platform at a train station, everything in sepia tones. A few trunks are stacked beside her, with stickers from her past destinations pasted on their scuffed exteriors. It is past dusk, and a little misty but you can still see the moon. A crescent, faintly, but it’s there. Her skirt rustles in the wind, and she holds her hat to her head so it doesn’t blow away. She has a postcard in her pocket she has forgot to drop off. Its signed wish you were here… The JCI Wish You Were Here Fashion Show takes place at Villa Amato (88 1st Ave.). Tickets are $25 in advance, and $30 at the doors. One of my favourite things about being a student at John Casablancas Institute is the location. Gastown is a perfect mix of old and new. It is difficult not to get attached to its historic charm. Being a student in the fashion business and creative arts program I found Gastown a very inspiring place to be. There have been plenty of opportunities to do photo shoots and I always struggled with choosing a setting because there are so many visually amazing places to choose from. Another perk Gastown has to offer is the amazing restaurants and cafes. Some I would recommend are Brioche and Bambo Cafe. Michelle Gant, Fashion Student Sponsors, Sponsors, SponsorsJuly 07, 2010
The soon to be graduates from John Casablanca Institute class #129 started with nothing for their fashion show but now thanks to many sponsors they are able to put on a fashion show from start to finish. Samantha Fawcett, JCI fashion student

Cirque Mystique benefits a great cause; net proceeds go to Covenant House. Every year, Covenant House rescues thousands of homeless kids from a hopeless life on the streets. For millions of homeless kids, basic needs like a hearty meal, warm bed, and safe shelter are true luxuries. Instead of knowing the joys of childhood, every day these kids face the life-or-death dangers of living on the streets. Cirque Mystique has a certain je ne sais quoi...June 25, 2010
Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, John Casablancas Institute\'s Class #129 is pleased to present “Cirque Mystique!” You may be thinking what is that? Why is it in French? Well for one, everything sounds cooler in French and secondly it is a circus themed fashion show! Now we had an awesome theme but needed a fantastic name to describe it. I was in charge of voting so I can tell you it was no easy task! We started with 10 names and then narrowed it down to 4: Cirque, Show Off, Beyond the Curtain, and Mystique. Cirque and Mystique tied and so instead of re-voting Joan our director suggested calling it Cirque Mystique. It was the perfect solution and thus our name was born! The spectacular fashion show takes place July 13th, 2010 at Heritage Hall (3102 Main Street, Vancouver). Tickets can be purchased in advance at John Casablancas Institute (150 – 220 Cambie Street, Vancouver) for $20.00 or $25.00 at the door. Doors open at 6:30pm; show at 8:00pm. Net proceeds go to Covenant House.

JCI supports Covenant House for next Fashion ShowJune 01, 2010
This organization has a system in place known as the “Continum”. The first step is outreach. Covenant House hits the streets of Van and build relationships and trust between themselves and the youth. The second step is the drop in center. Youth are able to come and go as they wish and are provided with shelter, support, food and somewhere to sleep. After the drop in center comes the shelter. At the shelter youth are provided with beds and food as well as being introduced to structure, stabilization and parenting of sorts. People are free to remain at the shelter for as long as they wish, this is usually about a month. After this they can choose if they would like to continue on to transitional living, where they are placed in a dorm style apartment where they can live for up to 2 years. Or, if they feel they are ready to regain complete independence, they can get a place of their own, with the assistance of Covenant House. This organization is not only getting youth off the street when they have nowhere else to go, but they are truly helping them take back control of their lives.
