Vivid and jewel tones are one of the most popular fall hair trends we’ve been seeing! These beautiful, bright colours can be worn in multiple ways – as under lights, hidden rainbows, dimensional colour or all over for the biggest impact. We can see why colourful hues are showing up everywhere, since they transform blondes into pastel princesses, turn dark hair to jewel toned goddesses and even give ombres new life.
The only downside is that this attention grabbing hair comes with a price. These are investment colours, and because of that a consultation is strongly suggested before vivids. It could even take several sessions to get the shade you want. So once you’ve got it, you’re going to want to hang onto it as long as possible. Here are our top tips to caring for your vivid hair colour:
Rather than dealing with the horror of a cold shower, simply wash your hair under the tap separately. Take it one step further by using an SLS free shampoo and a cuticle sealing conditioner like Axis Tetre shampoo and conditioner.
turn down the heat
Watch the heat settings on your blow dryer and irons as they can actually burn out your colour. If you need to restyle, turn your heat all the way down and always use a protective spray, even on dry hair!
The less you wash, the longer your vivid colour will last. Dry shampoo is going to be your new best friend here! They bump up your texture and allow you to go days in between washing. Kevin Murphy and Marc Anthony make our favourites.
use a colour depositing conditioner
Used once a week, colour depositing conditioner will keep your vivids and pastels fresh! I love Overtone colour conditioners and they’re even paraben free. They have different levels of intensity for their conditioners and lots and colour choices.
If you’re going to refresh your colour at home, be aware that not all colour deposits the same! I have experienced purples that go pink, and blues that go green, yikes! Always best to talk to your stylist and see if there are options for colour refreshing in between appointments.
Before you go vivid, do your research. Find a salon or a stylist that knows his or her way around bright colours before you book and you’ll be sure to get exactly what you want!
