JCI Body Spa Graduate: Gillian Cortes

28
08.2017

Gillian Cortes, born in the Philippines and raised in Vancouver, is a 22-year-old John Casablancas Institute Certified Esthetician and Lash Artist. Gillian enrolled in the JCI Body Spa Program in 2016 and graduated to pursue her career goals as an Eyelash Technician.

“I’ve always had a keen interest in the beauty industry but never thought of it as a legitimate career. I was originally interested in the Makeup Program, but once I talked to my advisor I was swayed into the Body and Spa Program. It had everything that I’ve always wanted to learn and more!”

Gillian began her post-secondary education by taking general studies in University, with thoughts of becoming an Occupational Therapist. Soon, however, she was introduced to the beauty industry and stumbled upon her perfect career path.

Gillian chose to study the Body Spa Program at JCI because of how authentic and real the program felt for her.

“I felt very comfortable and accepted by everyone at the school. I had visited previous schools to check the programs out, but I didn’t receive a comforting feeling. The staff at JCI definitely treats you like family, which I love!”

The Body Spa Program has both theory and practical aspects, which is what Gillian most enjoyed.

“At first it was scary working on real clients, but with practice, it became second nature. It really helped me gain my confidence to talk to my current clients.
Q: What are the pros and cons of working in the Body Spa Industry?

The pros are that you aren’t tied down to just one job, there are many fields to specialize in. You can become a nail or lash technician, facial specialist, massage therapist, and the list goes on!

The hours and very flexible as well, you can either start a home business or be your own boss.

The cons include tiring and busy days, especially when you have a lot of clients, your body is constantly moving! Either you’re working with your hands, standing up or crouching over.

Even on slow days, you may not have many clients, but there are many spa duties to finish before closing.

“I personally never thought I would enjoy doing eyelashes so much. I became dedicated to the art of lash extensions. Work for me doesn’t feel like work because I enjoy it so much!”

Q: When did you begin your Instagram page: “GCBEAUTYY?”

I began “gcbeautyy” in 2015 and used my Instagram account as a platform for makeup. However, once I got into the Body Spa Program, I changed directions and began using the account to showcase my work.

I was really surprised by how my Instagram account has flourished. I started off by following many accounts: makeup companies, eyelash technicians and companies (both local and international), and my clientele.

I interacted with my followers constantly and kept my account updated on what was happening. Instagram felt like a second job to me! You really have to work hard, be consistent and patient.

“Everything amazing takes time to grow.”

Q: What has been your prized moment throughout your career?

My most prized moment throughout my career has been all the acknowledgment I have received for my work from eyelash companies, colleagues, and my clients. It really humbles me and makes me feel proud of how much I have grown.

All the endless practicing and researching really helped me become the artist I am today. I still have so much to learn but it’s an amazing feeling to have so many people love what I do!

“I actually got my first Eyelash Technician job by word of mouth.”

When Gillian isn’t busy making her clients look and feel beautiful with lash extensions throughout an eight and a half hour day, she can be found spending time with her friends, perfecting her lash technique and timing on her family/friends, and taking care of herself.

“The learning doesn’t stop once your finish school. I watch a lot of Youtube videos and read blog posts about new techniques for lashing!”

With over 4,500 followers on Instagram, book your next lash appointment with JCI Body Spa graduate, Gillian Cortes!

How to Take Better Instagram Photos

17
08.2017

Capturing a picture for social media requires patience, good apps for filters and a lot of editing. Don’t worry if you don’t have a professional camera, you can use your old iPhone 5 and still make a photo look bright and sharp as if it were taken with an iPhone 7.

The Tips and Tricks to Taking High-Quality Instagram Pictures:

The Basic Rules:

Before you take any picture with your smartphone, make sure you have the grid feature turned on and try to use natural lighting as much as possible. Keep an eye on the subject you are trying to capture for your photo, and play around with the angles. Taking pictures from unusual viewpoints tend to come out very interesting and different.

The Background:

The background where you take your photos is crucially important. Choose an appropriate background that will go along with your Instagram feed and one that doesn’t have distractions. A great image can often be ruined with a Starbucks cup or other clutter in the back.

Here’s some inspiration for different styles of photos:

Hair Photos:

When using a ring light for hair photos, make sure you are up close and personal with your client! The closer you are, the clearer the picture. Using natural light is also a great option. Get your client to laugh, play with their hair or shake it around to add some movement to your feed. With those action shots – use the burst function to get a clear photo.

Up your Instagram hair page by using decor with clients pictures. See these inspirations photos from John Casablancas Institute’s Hair graduate and instructor, Elissa Wolfe:

Fashion Photos:

Fashion photos are always tricky, because finding that perfect background that suits your outfit is time consuming. Take a look at where local bloggers around you take their pictures by clicking on the location tagged in their photos. That should give you some inspiration on where to find good backdrops around your area! Try a mix of urban settings, natural backgrounds and plain walls to capture the perfect #OOTD post.

And don’t forget to take pictures from all angles!

Nail Photos:

Before taking pictures of your nails, or your client’s, many bloggers say that their secret tip is to use baby wipes to moisten any dry bits on your hands and have it looking clean before taking pictures. Lighting is also super important! Try using a ring light or taking your pictures outside to get the clearest image. Make sure your nails are the focus in your pictures and use these pictures as inspiration:

Makeup Photos:

Whatever you do, do not use the Instagram camera to take pictures, especially when taking pictures of close-up makeup looks. Makeup pictures always have to be extra clear in order to view crease lines, eyebrow colouring and all other products used on your/your client’s face. See below for examples:

The Smartphone Rules:

  • Always use the Rule of Thirds
  • Keep HDR off: Photos may turn out unnatural and overdone
  • Try a clip-on selfie ring light for your smartphone when taking close-up selfie pictures
  • Shoot during cloudy days: lighting is diffused and these days are perfect for photography

The APPS:

Here are the must-have editing apps that you will need:

With these tips and apps, your Instagram pictures will be better than ever! Remember to stick to an Instagram theme and you’ll start gaining more likes and followers.

Lash Extensions Trend for Summer

07
06.2017

Lash extensions by JCI Body Spa graduate Gillian Cortes

Summer is almost here, and with the new season comes new trends. Luckily for those of us who like to hit snooze, you can save some time off your daily routine with the latest phenomenon to hit the beauty world! Eyelash extensions are the longer-term alternative to false lashes, which are attached individually onto your natural lashes and can last up to a month.

With great lashes come great responsibility, so here are both pros and cons of getting extensions:

PROS:

Waking up ready to go for the day is by far the biggest advantage of lash extensions. During application, you get to relax, lay back with your eyes closed and listen to chill music in the background as the lash technician makes your lashes long and beautiful. The completely painless procedure will give you the lashes of your dreams in only 1-2 hours. Having lash extensions will definitely make Monday mornings easier. You might just find yourself getting addicted to batting your eyelashes!

“Lash extensions complete the look for an effortless morning.” — Jenifer Sterling, JCI Body Spa Instructor

CONS:

Let’s be honest, once you start getting lash extensions, there’s no stopping there. The only pain you may experience from your extensions is the swiping your credit card every few weeks. Lash extensions are not cheap and getting the best treatments can cost upwards of $100. Though fill appointments (upkeep after the initial application) are less costly, they will add up over time.

Maintenance doesn’t end there – you have to remember not to rub your eyes and will even be required to blow dry your lashes after showering. Brushing your lashes is also a must to prevent tangles. As with any treatment, it’s important to understand that infections and allergic reactions can sometimes occur, so chose a properly trained lash technician to keep that risk to a minimum.

There you have it, the pros and cons of lash extensions! Ready to try them out for yourself? You can book lash extensions appointment at the JCI Body Spa by calling 604-688-0328.
