08
07.2016

Can you believe that we’re about a week away from IMATS Vancouver 2016? IMATS is like Christmas to us and we’re getting more and more as we approach this exciting weekend!

If you haven’t already heard, IMATS Vancouver, which is happening on July 16-17th at the Vancouver Convention Center,  is one of the most anticipated makeup events of the year. You can network with industry leaders and meet top make-up artists, schools and shops working in the TV and film industries. There’s also a wide range of classes and vendors where you can get insider information and stock up your makeup kit.

What’s even more exciting is the Battle Of The Brushes! This makeup competition is open to students of a recognized makeup school and to those who have graduated 12 months prior to the competition date. Last year JCI had 8 graduates and students who participated in the competition (Check out the video below!). This year, we’re delighted to have 5 JCI makeup artists representing the school, with Molly McKay competing in the Star Wars-themed Character Prosthetic category on Saturday July 16th and Samantha St John, Megan Sheppard, Tiera Murray, and Jessica Lust competing in the carnival/circus-themed Beauty Fantasy category. The ladies have been dedicating a lot of time and effort to prepare for this special event – you don’t want to miss it!

The JCI Booth (#511) will be packed with excitement as the JCI IMATS Team will be demonstrating their own beauty and prosthetic looks. Make sure to come by the booth to watch or even just to say Hello. There’s also a makeup museum that boasts some of the most fascinating special effects makeups you’ll ever see. If you’ve got some money to spare, don’t forget to check out some of the vendors, including NYX Cosmetics, MAKEUP FOREVER, Suva Beauty, Morphe Brushes, and more! For a complete and map of booths, you can refer to the floor plan here: IMATS Vancouver 2016 Exhibitor List .

Whether this is your first IMATS or 4th, there’s always something fun lingering around IMATS. If you come by, come cheer on the girls during their Battle Of The Brushes or come by the booth and chat! In the meantime, tune into our blog as we’ll be highlighting and getting to know all the Battle Of The Brushes candidates next week!

JCI Grad Spotlight & #NYXfaceawards Top 30: Kimberley Weber

09
05.2016

Meet JCI Makeup Grad and #NYXfaceawards candidate, Kimberley Weber (@KimberlyMargarita_). With Kim consistently delivering out-of-this-world creative looks, it’s no surprise that she’s recently been chosen as one of NYX‘s #NYXfaceawards‘ Top 30. The first (of four) challenges have been revealed and each of the finalists will create an original look and tutorial video showing off how they did it. We can’t wait to see what Kimberley comes up. In the meantime, we got to know her and her journey..

Kimberley Weber JCI Makeup Grad

Tell us about what do you in the makeup industry? I currently freelance and do social media work.

What inspired you to get into makeup artistry? I wanted a career that would be diverse, and something in which I could express my creativity. I got into makeup through watching YouTube tutorials and realizing how much of an art form it was. I started experimenting with it and quickly fell in love with how you can transform a face into anything your imagination holds.

With a growing presence on social media, especially on Instagram, do you have any advice for other makeup artists wanting to use social media to further their careers? Consistency is huge, make sure you’re posting as much as you can. Experiment with different styles, don’t be afraid to step out of the box. Create things that YOU want to create, not what you think others want to see or just what is popular at the moment.

Do you have a favourite makeup look? Oh man that’s hard! If I had to choose it would be my floral demon look. It’s probably been my most recreated look and it makes me really happy that it’s inspired a lot of other people.

JCI makeup grad Kimberley Margarita

Can you name 3 makeup products that you can’t live without. Definitely a lightweight concealer with good coverage, my all time favourite is Naked Weightless Complete Coverage Concealer from Urban Decay. LASHES! I love huge dramatic lashes. My favourite brand is House of Lashes. A good brow pencil, need I say more?

Why did you choose to attend JCI’s Makeup Artistry program? I was debating between a few different schools, and after visiting JCI for the first time I immediately felt like I was in the right place. Everyone was so kind and friendly and you could tell how passionate the teachers were about their jobs. It was a no brainer!

Do you have any favourite moment(s) while attending JCI? My favourite would have to be creating my prosthetic creature/monster for my final exam in Unlimited 5. I never thought I’d be able to accomplish something like that so it was a very proud moment for me 🙂 Shout out to the amazing Tracy Lai for all the help and guidance throughout that project.

Are there any projects from you that we can look forward to in the next year? Number one would be my YouTube channel, Colour Creep. I really want to showcase more of my artistry and keep inspiring people to get creative with makeup.

Can you offer some advice to JCI students and new graduates wanting to succeed in the makeup industry? Work your butt off until you get to where you want to be.  Sometimes you’ll feel like giving up as the makeup industry can be hard to break into, but it’s so worth all the hard work when you’re following your passion. If you’re not sure exactly what you want to do yet, keep trying different things until you find your niche. It’ll happen! One of the great things about being a makeup artist is the job diversity. And last but not least don’t compare yourself to others. Every artist is on their own journey and you’ll definitely get to where you need to be!

30 artists were handpicked and chosen out of thousands of #NYXFACEAwards entries! These 30 contestants are in the running to compete for the title of Beauty Vlogger of the Year and $50,000 in cash. More details on their website: www.nyxfaceawards.com.
