Tim Walker needs no introduction – if you’re not already in love with his fairytale-like photographs you will be after looking at them. What first drew me to his photography were the amazing scenes that transport me to another world with larger than life props. This is what makes his work so alluring; he brings my dreams to the pages of my favorite magazines.
His use of props is amazing, as seen in his “Like A Doll” editorial with model Lindsey Wixson (pictured here) and most recently in his “Like A Warrior” editorial for Italian Vogue. Walker has taken quirky imaginative portraits of Tilda Swinton, Helena Bohnam Carter, Alexander McQueen, Mimi Wadell, Madonna and more. He captures familiar personalities in ways we’ve never seen.
It was at the age of 25 when Walker shot his first fashion story for Vogue that his fame began. Before that Walker worked as a freelance photographic assistant in London then he moved to New York City to work as a full time assistant to Richard Avedon. In 2008 Walker received the ‘Isabella Blow Award for Fashion Creator’ from The British Fashion Council. In 2009 he received an Infinity Award from The International Center of Photography in New York. In 2012 Walker received an Honorary Fellowship from the Royal Photographic Society.
After over a decade of being featured in Vogue and concentrating on photographs, Walker is now making a film which I’m sure will capture our attention and make us fall in love with him all over again.
His doll photos are the inspiration for the JCI Fashion Show, Porcelain which debuts on Tuesday, March 25th 2014 at Performance Works on Granville Island, doors open at 6pm and the show begins at 7:30pm. Tickets are available at JCI (220 Cambie) for $20 or $25 at the door. All net proceeds will go to Covenant House.
