Jenna Johnson: JCI Hair Graduate and Stylist of the Year

John Casablancas Institute’s Hair graduate Jenna Johnson is Kelowna’s Hairstylist of the Year.

“I’ve always been the creative type.”

Born and raised in British Columbia, Jenna had known since high school that she wanted to pursue a career in hair styling. She enrolled at John Casablancas Institute to complete the 6-month long Hair Art Design Program in 2012.

“I’ve always been a wild one— I couldn’t sit still in classes and constantly had to be doing something with my hands.”

After picking up her first pair of scissors 5 years ago at JCI, Jenna has accomplished amazing goals. She recently celebrated 3 years of working at Plan B Headquarters, a hair salon based in Kelowna.

Jenna has been strongly inspired by one of her JCI Instructors Karl Brown, who has influenced her hair techniques. Other inspirations include Jamie Sea, the girls at Habit Salon, and Sofie.

“I loved my instructors at JCI. They were incredibly talented and knowledgeable. Each instructor had a different way of teaching but it was important learning all techniques going forward into my career.”

Jenna gives her clients tips on how to properly maintain healthy hair and suggests two important tools: protein and moisture! Especially after a lightening hair treatment, it’s important to keep your hair nourished.

“My favorite hairstyle to create is a bob— whether it’s textured or blunt.”

If you’re interested in becoming a hairdresser, then you have to know that there is no time for sitting down in a busy hair salon! Jenna acknowledges that the best part of being a hair stylist is having a creative outlet that allows you to express your unique personality throughout every service.

“If you enjoy a clear headspace, then this is probably not the best job for you.”

At the age of 21 and 22, Jenna has won Silver for Hairstylist of the Year in Okanagan, BC and this year she takes home a Gold for 2017’s Hairstylist of the Year.
