This time of year has a reputation of being a pretty gloomy time. Generally the weather isn’t the best, bills from the holiday season are due and it’s when most people will end up giving up those New Year’s Resolutions. It’s never easy to admit that you’re not going to fully follow through on a well intentioned goal you set. This reality can unfortunately lead to those winter blues and be very discouraging. To help avoid that, we’ve compiled a list of ways to stay on track when the going gets tough!
Set attainable goals
It would be great to work out 7 days a week, never eat junk food and wake up early every day, but you’re setting yourself up for failure if you try to change so drastically. It’s way better to set smaller, attainable goals rather than expecting huge lifestyle changes overnight. Why don’t you buy a 10 pack of fitness classes a give yourself a deadline to use them all up? If you’re setting a goal to give something like junk food up, try starting with 1 or 2 days a week and going from there.
Celebrate your victories
It takes time to make positive change in your life, so don’t forget about those small accomplishments. Let yourself be proud of all the milestones you hit, since that feeling of success will encourage you to keep going.
Don’t sweat the small stuff
Just like you want to find joy in all your victories, don’t lose yourself in the hard times or mistakes you make. If you “fail” in one of your goals, try to figure out why and move past it. Don’t just give up when you’re struggling with something- try to understand what makes it so hard for you and how you can improve in the future.
Build up to big changes
Don’t try to change everything all at once. It’s almost impossible to stick with a routine that’s completely off base from your current reality. Make more frequent small changes rather than trying to do everything differently at the same time.
Reevaluate year round
January 1st is a great time to reflect on the previous year and get motivated. Keep in mind though, it’s just another day! You can change your habits, attitude and lifestyle anytime. Keep checking in with your progress throughout the year and don’t be afraid to update your goals or try something new whenever you’re ready for it.
