Persephone was the beautiful goddess of harvest, taking care of plants and flowers on the earth. One summer day, she began picking flowers with her friends and ended up in a forest alone. When hearing a noise from the sky, she looked above to see Hades, the god of the underworld, driving a dark chariot across the sky. Before she could scream, Hades snatched Persephone into his arms and furiously rode away. With a rumble below, the ground opened up and Hades drove the chariot into the earth, absorbing the pair into the Underworld. This is the start of the story that inspired fashion group 145’s graduation fashion show.
To retrieve the goddess, Zeus intervened leaving Hades had no choice but to obey. Before releasing Persephone however, he gave her a pomegranate to eat as a parting gift. Persephone was famished; having not ate throughout her time in the underworld. When Persephone bit into the pomegranate, she didn’t realize the fruit bound her to Hades for eternity. The pomegranate stain remained forever on her lips as a sign of their bond.
Because of this bond, seasons were created. When Persephone was living on earth, the sun shone and flowers bloomed. During her time in the underworld, Persephone was in sorrow and nothing grew, resulting in winter.
Persephone the fashion show revolves around the twisted life of the young goddess, showcasing both her youthful innocence and unfortunate darkness. Spring’s flowing florals and a pastel palette contrast with the sheer lace and dark hues of the Underworld. Splashes of pomegranate are planted throughout the show.
