Unexpected High School Classes that Prepare you for a Fashion Career

Those seemingly irrelevant high school classes that everyone has to take? Believe it or not, they’re the courses that will provide you with the solid foundation you’ll need to pursue future fashion endeavours. Let’s break it down:

1. English

In all fashion jobs, effective communication is a crucial ability in order to explain your process and convey your ideas. Think about it: applying for fashion school will involve walking an admissions panel through your portfolio. Fashion and PR journalism are all about a way with words, and if you ever want to launch your own fashion line? You’ll be pitching investors, using your words to convince them to bet on you.

2. Math

A fashion buyer is one of the most coveted jobs in the industry and—guess what—it involves a lot of numbers. In fact, despite what people think, so do a lot of fashion jobs. Creating patterns, ordering material, calculating profits… a strong grasp of numbers is indispensable.

3. History

Fashion doesn’t stand alone. It is influenced by—and influences—the world around it. An intimate understanding of social, cultural, political, artistic, and economic movements throughout history will help you understand how fashion has evolved and continues to be shaped by the world around it. Being able to speak about this intelligently will set you apart in both fashion school and job interviews.

4. Art

At its core, fashion is art. Taking high school art classes will lay the groundwork for understanding and appreciating it. You’ll need to understand important concepts like leading lines, colour theory, perspective, and contrast. No matter the fashion job you’re angling for, this is one elective you don’t want to forego.

5. Home Economics

Whether they call it Home Economics, Fashion Arts, or simply Sewing, any high school class that gives you tailoring experience is a bonus. But you don’t necessarily want to be a designer? Doesn’t matter: an intimacy with the elements of fashion—from being able to recognize whether a seam has been stitched well to appreciating a well-placed dart—will always benefit you, no matter your role.

6. Business Class

If you’re one of the lucky students whose high school offers business classes, take advantage of it! From fashion houses to retail stores, fashion is as much business as it is art. Take it from one of the greats, Tommy Hilfiger, who once said, “I think it is really important to have a sense of business. As a designer, you can get so wrapped up in the design and fashion side that you forget the business side.”

Taking these classes that prepare you for a fashion career will set you up for success straight from high school! Think you’ve got what it takes to make it in fashion? Check out our fashion program!
