Born and raised in Brazil, Carla Dutra Borges moved to Vancouver a year ago to start a new life and career in the fashion industry— a major change from working as an industrial engineer back home.

“When I was planning to move to Vancouver to study, I had two options: start a course related to my previous graduation and keep myself in the same field that I already had tons of experience in, or follow my dream to work in the fashion field.”

As you can guess, Carla decided to follow her passion and enroled in the Fashion Business & Creative Arts program at John Casablancas Institute. As of now, Carla is working with Aritzia, one of Canada’s top womenswear fashion company, as their Workforce Planner.

Q: Tell us a bit about yourself.

I love spending time with my family and friends and enjoying their company. On a regular day, you can find me practicing art-related activities, including dancing, singing and attending concerts/theatre.

Q: How was your time like at JCI?

I had such an amazing time at JCI. It’s amazing how much support I received as an international student from the school. Not only was I able to make connections, but I was also able to truly understand the fashion industry.

Q: What is it like working as Aritzia’s Workforce Planner? What does a Workforce Planner do?

I started as a part-time style advisor at Aritzia 6 months before the end of my course. When I concluded my course at JCI, I applied for the position of Workforce Planner at the support office.

The position seemed to be aligned with my educational background and experiences. So I applied to the job and after my resume analysis, I completed an Excel test and an interview with the department manager.

The workforce planner goal is to maximize sales and employee experience while controlling wastage. In order to achieve this goal, we receive inputs from different departments to seamlessly integrate cross-functional projects and initiatives into retail stores, analyze data to plan, and forecast sales goals. We also partner with retail management teams to share and discuss performances, KPIs and labor allocation details. The output of our job is the schedule of all the stores.

Q: What does a day in your life look like?

I typically wake up at 6 AM and get to the office around 7:30 AM. Every day is a little different at work, however, the main goal is to make sure the stores are prepared to achieve their goals. When I’m back home, I’m just a regular housewife.

Q: What advice would you give to someone wanting to pursue a career in the fashion industry?

Go after the opportunities! Whether you want to pursue a career in fashion, or anything other areas, don’t be afraid to receive a ‘no,’ but make sure you go after the YES! And always be prepared, no matter what.
