Born in Vancouver, BC and raised in North Delta, Nimrit (Nim) Sanghera always had an interest in becoming an Esthetician. Before enrolling at John Casablancas Institute for Body Spa, Nim had completed a Makeup Artistry Program elsewhere but was intrigued to learn more about the Spa Industry.

“I felt that JCI prepared me really well for the spa world!”

Nim is the proud owner of her salon, Hush Haven, which recently celebrated its one year anniversary. Her passion is her work she enjoys giving facials and feels at ease when doing treatments for her clients. When she isn’t at the salon, Nim enjoys hiking, swimming, kayaking and being with her husband, family and friends.

“It makes me happy knowing I can give someone that quiet time to just sleep or to ‘shut off’ for an hour or more.”

What inspired you to get into the Spa Industry?

“My mom taught me how to wax when I was young, but there was a lot to learn in Body Spa. I wanted to get into esthetics because there was so much that was taught in the program and I knew it was going to be the perfect fit for me.”

How was your experience at JCInstitute?

“Before enrolling at JCI I was working as a cosmetician at Shoppers Drug Mart and practising freelance makeup for weddings and prom. I called JCI one day and spoke to one of the advisors, Gina, who made me feel very comfortable right away. I scheduled a meeting with her and when we met I knew there was no other place I wanted to do the Body Spa program. All my questions were answered thoroughly and I never felt like I was being pushed to enrol in the program. After going into detail about the program/curriculum, and I couldn’t wait to start!”

“We had a great class with a talented and supportive group of students and instructor.”

“My instructor was Sabrina St Pierre and I felt so lucky to have had her as my teacher. Sabrina had the most positive attitude and kindest heart, and she is such a talented esthetician. I learned a lot of skills from her and really enjoyed that after we learned a new technique, we got to practice on our family, friends, and clients who would book through the school. Interacting with clients really boosted our confidence and prepared us for the real world.”

Were you working anywhere during your time at JCI?

“I was working at Shoppers Drug Mart at two different locations as a cosmetician while at JCI. I did my work experience at Aru Spa and Salon in White Rock, and ended up getting a job there in October!”

“I first worked as a Spa Attendant which was a great experience and really taught me how to get things clean and organized efficiently and quickly. Then I had a 2-3 week training and was working as an esthetician there providing all esthetic services. While I was working at Aru, I also started working at Uptown Med Spa. I was extremely busy but loved being at both spas. I gained so much knowledge and also more confidence in myself and in my work. Everyone you meet in this industry has something new or unique to teach you, whether its a facial massage or how to do extractions better, you never stop learning!”

Tell us about your salon Hush Haven.

“In January 2017 I had decided to take a break from work. I had been working non-stop and needed to take a breather to plan my wedding for April 2017. It was a much-needed break and reminded me that it’s okay to relax and connect with myself again.”

“My goal in high school was to one day have my own business, but the older I got the more that dream terrified me. I’m learning that life is about doing things that scare you and to take risks, that’s how we grow as individuals.”

“I had my husband, family and friends supporting me and decided to just go for it. I found the perfect little facial room to rent in a hair salon called Phenomena Hair Design located in South Surrey. I wanted it to be a place for men and women to come and enjoy relaxing treatments.

Hush Haven turned one in June it has been a pretty amazing first year. I specialize in customized Oxygeneo facials and also Dermaplaning treatments. I’m also bringing a new facial into the salon that will be great for all skin types. I look forward to learning about new treatments and adding more facial services to the list. I also provide makeup services from the salon, so it is really nice to have the balance of being able to do both passions of mine.”

What has been the most prized moment for you throughout your career?

“I don’t think I can choose one moment because there have been countless special moments in so many different phases of my career so far. The love and support I receive on a daily basis are what inspires me the most. When a client looks in the mirror after a facial and goes “wow, my skin looks amazing“, or when my husband and my family tell me how proud they are of me, those are the moments that I cherish.

What advice would you give to aspiring future Estheticians?

“It’s an amazing industry. You have the option of doing it all or specializing in just one specific service. You get to be creative, you never stop learning, and all estheticians I’ve met or worked with love their job as much as I do. Life can be super stressful, but I feel the services we provide to people can be so healing. Whether its facials, massages or just getting your nails done, it gives people time to just relax and unwind. If you feel like it’s for you, just go for it!”
