2018 has been a great year in the makeup industry, filled with glitter and gems, electric eyeshadows, golden highlighters, bold lipsticks and more. Here is this year’s top creative makeup looks, including special effects makeovers, we’ve come across, created by JCI Makeup Artistry graduates.
Samantha Ravndahl: Glitter Eyes
Beauty influencer Samantha Ravndahl has had yet another successful year in the makeup industry. From traveling Japan, collaborating with JCI graduate and Director of Special Effects Tray Lai on a special Youtube video, to meet and greets and hosting masterclasses at Sephora Yorkdale, this talented superstar is all over the map!
Tray Lai: Master Splinter
As mentioned above, Tray Lai is the Director of Special Effects Makeup at JCI and an exceptional makeup artist. She has worked on the set of many movies including Deadpool, Pirates of the Caribbean, Star Trek and more.
One of our favorite creative looks that Tray created this year was the Master Splinter makeover she did on Thor Diakow, a host on Breakfast Television Vancouver and CityNews. How amazing does Master Splinter look?!
Janica Sandy: Fantasy Makeup
Janica Sandy has had a year of success during her time at JCI. From being nominated to participate in the 2018 Vancouver IMATS Battle of the Brushes competition to placing third in the Beauty/Fantasy category, Janica’s talent continues to grow.
Bold lips were a trend that emerged this year and we fell in love. This bald cap application look is beautifully styled by Janica.
Leigh Dickson: Gem Eyes
Aside from glitter, rhinestones and gems played a major part in makeup trends from this year and became more popular than ever. We love when our students and graduates have fun with makeup and Leigh Dickson is not afraid to show off daring looks on her Instagram page.
With over 5,000 likes, this dragon scale inspired eye was a spectacular eye makeup look of 2018. We can’t wait to see what Leigh has in store for the new year.
Abby Ruhman: Yellow Lover
With over 52k followers and growing, Abby Ruhman is a professional hair and makeup artist experienced in commercial, beauty, film, editorial, special effects, and bridal makeup. After graduating the JCI Makeup Artistry program, Abby moved back to Denver, Colorado where she has been working non-stop creating makeup miracles.
Yellow has been a blooming color this year and we are not complaining! A bright pop of yellow is what we all needed this year. The above look by Abby was published in Defined Magazine.
Jackie Bowler: The Psychopomp
We see amazing work by our students all-year-around at JCI and during final exam season is when we get to witness the best of the best. Jackie Bowler created the above psychopomp look for her final exam and we were blown away.
The creativity, the details, and the costume were impressively accomplished by Jackie. We are certain that this artist is going to create many more magical looks in the makeup industry next year!
Samantha St. John: More Gems, Please
With over 44k followers, the Queen of terrifying special effects looks is hands down Samantha St. John. This talented influencer celebrates Halloween all-year-around with her horrifying SFX makeup creations. However, one of our favorite looks that Sam created is this skull with gems. (We weren’t lying when we said gems took over glitter this year!)
Krista Hann: Pride Makeup
After graduating from the JCI Makeup program, Krista Hann began working in the film industry and we are so proud of her. She has been growing her Instagram feed as well and it was certainly tough to find a favorite creative look that she created this year.
Krista painted this pride-inspired makeup upon graduating JCI and during pride month. With over 700 likes, this was without a doubt a stunning creation we saw this year.
Meagan MacRae: Silver Foil
Meagan MacRae, also known as Paragon Makeup on Instagram, has been working towards her goals this year and it has been noticed. This influencer is starting her very own beauty on-the-go business truck, Beauty En Route. We are so excited for Meagan and her new adventures.
As if gems weren’t enough this year, silver foils was another creative trend we witnessed. This stunning and creative look was our favorite makeup that Maegan created this year.
