Program Co-Director & Industry Liaison
Makeup is more than just a career for JCI Makeup Co-Director and Industry Liaison Jennine Cook; it is a way of life. “When you spend as much time immersed in the business of makeup as I do, and still love it – you know you’ve found your true calling.” Starting her career in film at the New York Film Academy, and then studying costume and art design at the Vancouver Film School, Jennine knew something was missing. She finally filled that void when she began to study makeup nearly 17 years ago in the JCI makeup program. “I’ve never looked back. I love all elements of the industry, but makeup was just the right fit.”
After completing her makeup program, Jennine spent a decade working locally in film and television; keying series on WNetwork’s, “The Shopping Bags” and Slice Network’s “Making it Big”. She filled in the gaps between seasons working on commercials for brands such as McDonald’s, Mattel Toys, OxiClean, Kohl’s. Jennine discovered her love for special effects makeup while working on many union and non-union films, ultimately leading to a Leo Award nomination for Best Makeup in a Short Drama in 2006.
One of Jennine’s greatest accomplishments to date is being the owner of her local costume and theatrical supply shop in White Rock, called Transformation. “I have always had a love for costumes as well as makeup, so when the opportunity to open a shop of my own came up in 2004, I jumped on it. I had spent many years working in the fast lane of film, and I loved it. But I was entering a new phase in my life, thinking marriage, kids- all that grown up stuff, and this was a great way to transition into that.” Now a mother of two, Jennine has found balance between doing a job she loves and being there for her girls. “Any working mother will tell you it’s not always easy to fit it all in, but I’ve always been independent and am proud of my career. It’s important to me to be a good mom, but it’s also important for me to be a makeup artist. It’s who I was before I had kids, and I still love it. I need the creative outlet and excitement it brings to my day. The greatest thing about being a makeup artist is that you aren’t limited to just one area; your career can grow and change just as you do. In the business of beauty there is always a way to keep busy; it’s one of the hugest industries in the world. I’ve done everything from work at makeup counters to travel internationally as a makeup trainer.”
The possibilities are endless for a makeup artist. With modern technology you can make a career solely on social media, being a beauty blogger or doing YouTube tutorials. There is the film sector which covers everything including television and expands further than Hollywood. In Vancouver there is a whole new sector of reality TV shows being shot everyday and they all require makeup. From commercials to music and corporate videos the industry far bigger than most would expect, you just have to be willing to put yourself out there. “I have been fortunate to dabble in it all during my time in this business. Sure, each sector has its highs and lows, but when one area is on a low, I have learned to turn it into an opportunity to explore another area. In doing that, it has made me a more well-rounded and successful makeup artist.”
“At the end of the day, JCI has always been a part of my career. From my training, to working as a makeup instructor and now as Co-Director and Industry Liaison in the Makeup Department, I started my career here and it continues to be a part of my life in so many ways. I‘ve been to quite a few schools, but JCI is more than that, its home. I‘ve worked many jobs in the industry along the way and when asked where I did my training, I am always proud to say JCI. The team I learned from and work with is amazing and I am so happy to be a part of that.”
