How to Destroy: a RET•RO•GRADE DIY

Retrograde gaby and devon.jpg

While designing for RET•RO•GRADE I found it very hard for me to come up with garments that looked destroyed and good. It was difficult at first but with the help of some good tunes and mountains of different fabrics I got inspired and started working. Two of the dresses I created were featured in our RET•RO•GRADE photo shoot.

If you are feeling inspired here is how to make your old summer jeans into your new, cool, summer distressed shorts. You’re going to need a few things like the jeans, a marker, some scissors and either a sewing machine or just a needle and thread.

Step 1: Put on your jeans and make a line with the marker so you cut at just the right length.

Step 2: Cut along the line and then sew just above the line so it doesn’t fray past that point.

Step 3: Now it’s time for the fun part. Distressing! There are many different things you can do to get this look. You can pull at the just cut edge to fray it; get out the dish washing detergent and get
creative; pick up the scissors and make a couple slashes close together and pick at those slashes to make those worn out holes; or patch them up.

Here is a great site for destroying your cloths in the name of fashion.

RET•RO•GRADE the fashion show will be held at Performance Works on Granville Island on Tuesday July 16. Doors open at 6pm and the show begins at 7:30. Tickets are available at JCI (220 Cambie) for $20 or $25 at the door. All net proceeds will go to the Looking Glass Foundation.
