The Birkenstock Trend

A tradition since 1774, Birkenstocks are making quite the comeback. This German designed shoe was once worn by hippies all around the world and was often frowned upon by fashionistas. I find it interesting that those who most likely looked at Birkenstocks in disgust two years ago, are now the first to be sporting them around town. Designed for comfort, and not so much to make a fashion statement, Birkenstocks are turning out to be the must have accessory of the season.

Dressed up with a silk skirt or dressed down with jeans and a t-shirt, these shoes are very versatile. Not only are they offered in multiple colours, with white proving to be the most popular this season, they are also offered in a few different styles. The Arizona style (shown in the image) is a proven seller and the most common style seen among those fashionistas following the trend. I can’t think of a fashion blogger who hasn’t posted a photo of a pair of Arizona Birkenstocks. Everyone from Man Repeller to local fashion blogger, Cara McLeay has been seen in this current trend.

I hate to admit it but I am definitely one of those fashionistas who has hopped on the Birkenstock bandwagon. I might get some weird looks from people who still think they are hippie shoes worn by middle aged women on Hornby Island, but my goodness they are comfortable. And personally, that is all that matters to me. It’s just a bonus that they are on their way back in style.

Birkenstocks can be found at the following retailers in the lower mainland- Soft Moc, Gravity Pope, Holt Renfrew, Town Shoes and Browns. Make sure to get them while they’re still in stock!
