The cape trend was first spotted on the red carpet at the 2012 Oscars. Gwyneth Paltrow topped everybody’s best-dressed list in her Tom Ford white cape dress. She was elegant, regal, and ahead of her time.

Despite the buzz created by Gwyneth’s fashion choice, we have not seen this style return until this year’s Golden Globe awards. Lupita Nyong’o showed off her rendition of the cape dress and got rave reviews from fashion critics across the globe.

The red cape gown worn by Lupita has resulted in a trickle down effect. Ever since we saw this glowing beauty on the red carpet, there’s been varying versions of it all over the runways. Christian Siriano added cape style jackets and tunics to his fall 2014 collection, along with many other designers.

Celebrities such as Karlie Kloss and Kim Kardashian have also embraced this trend. Considering these iconic ladies have been spotted in capes – this trend is sure to spread like wild fire.
