School Closures/ Class Cancellations Policy Procedure.
JCI is committed to remaining open and delivering education as per all class schedules, times and dates. Any cancellation has a significant impact on hundreds of people. JCI will not be closed due to snow or other weather conditions unless there is damage, power outages or other major circumstances that put the safety of our students and staff at risk.
In the unlikely necessity of a school closure, the following policies/ procedures will apply:
1. Announcement of Closures – many factors are considered prior to announcing a closure inlcuding current weather conditions, power, local road conditions, transir services, closure of other major Post Secondary Instituttions in Vancouver (UBC, SFU, VCC) and overall student safety. As conditions can change substantially within a few hours, asssesments and final decisions will be communicated to students and staff by 7am through the following means:
- JCI Website
- Instagram Stories
- JCI voicemail message
Please check social media platforms before leaving for school during extreme weather conditions. Only school closures will be posted. JCI is open unless posted otherwise.
2. Travelling to School – as weather and road conditions can vary drastically from one region of the Lower Mainland to another, each student must make their own decision regarding their ability and safety of travel to school based on the conditions in their specific area. Students commuting from the areas with working transit and viable roads are expected to attend school.
3. Modified Snow Days – Although the Institute is open and fully functioning, it is understood that some students travel to school on routes that may be unavailable in extreme snow conditions or will present longer than normal delays. In such cases students will not be penalized for absence or lateness. Students amust notify the school by phone or email under these circumstances.
4. Missed education due to actual School Closure will be supplemented by the additional class time and/or workshops at the discretion of the Institute.
