About Vancouver
Vancouver is a diverse playground for creative and entrepreneurial minds alike. Known for its natural beauty, it provides endless inspiration for those of us who are lucky enough to live here year-round. Vancouver is a safe city that’s relatively easy to navigate.
As a student, we encourage you to make the most of what Vancouver has to offer—by immersing yourself in the creative, cultural scene, as well as grounding into nature.
Here’s what every Vancouver-transplant needs to know:
The Vancouver Airport (YVR) is located in Richmond—just 30 minutes from the downtown core
Vancouver summers are legendary (July, August are great times to explore local islands and be near the water)
It rains most of the year here—part of living in Vancouver is braving the rain with proper gear and umbrellas

All international students must have an approved study permit to attend JCI. For the most up-to-date study permit application process, please visit this website.
All international students are required to have medical coverage or health insurance.
The BC Medical Services Plan (MSP) is the standard medical insurance in British Columbia. It covers hospitalization, most physician services, and referrals—but it does not include prescription medications, eyeglasses, or dental care. If you are new to British Columbia, it is strongly encouraged that you apply for MSP as soon as you arrive in Vancouver. Without coverage, you will be responsible for paying for any medical services you receive.
How to Apply for the Medical Services Plan (MSP)
You can learn how to apply online or download the application form from the BC Government website here.

Finding the right place to live is a big part of feeling at home in a new city. Vancouver offers a range of housing options—from furnished student residences to shared apartments, homestays, and private rentals. We recommend starting your search early and using trusted platforms like Craigslist, PadMapper, or Facebook Marketplace.
Tips for international students:
Look for housing close to transit for easy access to our Robson campus (opening Jan 2026)
Consider homestay programs for a more supported living experience
Be cautious of rental scams—never send money before verifying the space
Know your rights as a tenant in British Columbia

Getting around the city is easy thanks to TransLink, Vancouver’s public transit system. Most students rely on the SkyTrain, buses, or the SeaBus to get to and from class.
What you need to know:
JCI is located in downtown Vancouver (Gastown until January 2026, then Robson Street)
You’ll need a reloadable Compass Card to ride transit—available at most SkyTrain stations

Our campus is centrally located, so you’ll have access to cafés, shops, and everything you need between classes.
Getting to JCI:
JCI’s campus is conveniently located in the heart of Gastown. Waterfront station is a 5-minute walk from us and is the central hub for Canada Line, Expo Line, Seabus and Westcoast Express.
Transit Access: Located in the downtown core, our campus is accessible via multiple bus lines, as well as the Canada Line, Expo Line on the SkyTrain, Seabus, and Westcoast Express.
